Do you need a building permit for a swim spa in Victoria?

In Victoria you must have a building permit to install any spa or pool deeper than 300mm. While ‘portable’ spa pools are exempt from this legislation - and Fastlane Pools swim spas are designed to be portable - a spa with a depth greater than 300mm must also have a safety barrier around it, which itself requires a building permit.

The short answer: yes, Victorians do need to seek a council building permit to install a Fastlane Pools swim spa, though if the swim spa is free standing and above ground, then you commonly only need to fence the step area. Any sinking into ground or decking built up to the pool will also require fencing.

Do you need a fence around your swim spa in Victoria?

As above, our swim spas have water depths greater than 300mm, and therefore need a safety barrier to surround them, which in turn needs a building permit. Contact your local council for more information, or visit the Victorian Building Authority website for a list of pool safety barrier requirements.

How to register your swim spa with your local Victoria council

Since late-2019 it has been mandatory for swim spa owners in Melbourne and across Victoria to register their spa with their local council. The process differs from office to office, so contact your council or visit the Victorian Building Authority website to find out more. 

Alternatively, Hot Spring Melbourne has a working relationship with an independent certifier (Australian Pool Permits) who can help you to register your spa and obtain the necessary permits. We have found that using a certifier - as opposed to dealing directly with councils - greatly speeds up the process.
