Why is my spa pool losing heat overnight?

You come home after a long day at work, and you can think of nothing better than sinking into the warm, bubbling waters of your hot tub. It’s the perfect way to relax, unwind and spend quality time with the ones you love. But when you step in, you notice the water isn’t as warm as it should be. You’ve invested in a hot tub, not a lukewarm tub.

A hot tub can lose heat for a number of reasons. Perhaps you left the cover off, allowing heat to escape. Maybe there’s an issue with your heater. Why is my hot tub losing temperature?

The average temperature that hot tubs are set to is around that of the human body: 36-37C. This temperature is generally far above ambient air temperature, particularly because hot tubs are used the most when the weather is cold. Your hot tub therefore has to be built well, and to work hard, in order to retain that heat. And in some cases it might struggle to do so.

Forgetting to put the cover on

Just as putting a lid on a saucepan will help keep heat inside, so too will placing a cover on a hot tub.   • Low water flow: Enough water needs to work its way through the heater and into the spa in order to warm it. If your spa isn’t heating up, you may have a flow or pressure problem.
  • Thermostat issues: The thermostat controls the temperature that your water leaves the heater at. If water feels like it’s coming out cooler than the temperature you’ve set, you may have a thermostat or temperature sensor issue.
  • High limit switch issues: The high limit switch ensures that the temperature of your spa is kept to a safe level. But if your spa isn’t heating, it may be activating too early.
  • Broken heater element: The element is the part of the heater that actually warms the water. If yours is faulty, your spa will be unable to produce any heat.

How fast does a hot tub lose heat?

The rate at which a hot tub loses heat can vary markedly. An uncovered and badly insulated spa sitting in freezing temperatures can lose a large amount of heat in a very short period of time.
