How big is your family, both immediate and extended? Ideally you’ll have a seat for every potential guest.
Where will you install your family spa? Ensure you have the necessary space, and access to power, water and drainage.
Are you buying a family spa for health and wellness? For quality time? Your reasons for wanting one will determine your perfect model.
A quality family spa will be built to higher standards in terms of energy efficiency, safety and longevity.

How much do family spas cost?
Bringing a wealth of health and financial benefits, a Hot Spring spa pool is an investment, both in your family and in your home. A high-quality hot tub that is seamlessly integrated into the look and landscape of your property can add real value to it, while also saving you money by enhancing your family’s physical and mental health.
The level of investment that you’ll make will depend on the size of the spa pool you choose, and the features that you and your family would like to enjoy. The Hot Spring range starts at as little as a few thousand dollars and has the added benefit of offering market-leading efficiency, seriously reducing ongoing costs.
What are hot tub shells made from?
Hot tub shells have two main functions: to keep the water in and to keep the water warm. Shells come in a variety of materials, each with its own strengths and weaknesses:
Vinyl
Used in most swimming pools, vinyl’s cost-effectiveness makes it a cheaper choice for hot tubs too. It doesn’t retain heat well, nor is it particularly durable.
Rotomoulded plastic
This process sees plastic powder heated and spun in a mould. The result is lightweight, cost-effective and far more durable than vinyl.
Acrylic
The Rolls-Royce of hot tub plastics. Although you pay more for acrylic, you’ll enjoy a spa that is both beautiful and durable. However, it is important to note that not all acrylic hot tubs are created equal.
Wood
There’s no arguing that wood looks great, but you’ll pay for the looks with endless maintenance, both on the inside and the outside of the tub.
Can children go in hot tubs?
Hot Spring spa pools have been designed with safety as the highest priority and are fine to use for anyone tall enough to stand on the bottom while their head is completely out of the water. This means that most models are safe for children as young as five years old.
For children who can’t stand on the bottom with their head out of the water, supervision is advised. It is up to the spa pool owner to be mindful of the risks. At Hot Spring we also advise that young children should avoid spending periods of longer than five minutes in a heated tub, particularly those set to the maximum temperature.

Do hot tubs relieve stress?
At Hot Spring we design spa pools that offer tangible mental health benefits. The ambience of a hot tub has been proven to help your mental state by easing stress and promoting relaxation. We further enhance the de-stressing qualities of spa pools through our market-leading hydrotherapy features, and the ability to pump relaxing sound out of in-spa Bluetooth speakers.
Combine this with the relaxation that comes from quality family time, and a Hot Spring spa pool can have an incredibly positive effect on your mental state. Your family can convene after a hard day of work and study, and soak all their stresses away!
How many years does an outdoor hot spa last?
The longevity of your spa pool will be determined by its quality, the conditions to which it is subjected and your care and maintenance efforts. While a cheaper spa might be tempting, you may need to replace it multiple times to match the extended life of a higher quality model. By buying a Hot Spring spa pool, you can be confident that you’ve invested in a spa that will last.
As a ballpark figure, a hot tub can be expected to last anywhere from five years to 20 or more. A high-quality, sheltered and well-maintained tub will last decades, while a cheap, exposed and neglected tub might struggle to even reach the five year mark.
Are family spas high maintenance?
If you choose your model wisely, your family spa will require a surprisingly low amount of maintenance. With the help of smart tech, upkeep can be quick and easy:
The cartridge-based FreshWater™ Salt System requires as little as five minutes of maintenance per month.
Our Tri-X® filters can be washed in the dishwasher – all you need to do is remove and replace!
Most spa pools should be drained every 2-3 months. Our FreshWater™ Salt System keeps water fresh for a year.
Are family spas good for your health?
Families that soak together, stay together. That’s because a family spa offers quality, device-free time with one another, as well as a range of health and wellness benefits:
Immersing your body in warm water increases your heart rate and opens your blood vessels, sending more oxygen and nutrients flowing around your body.
The warmth relaxes and loosens tight and tired muscles, and can help to reduce swelling and inflammation.
A soak in a spa reduces chronic pain by taking weight off your joints.
Family spa pools are relaxing, device-free settings where you can connect with one another on a deeper level.

Frequently asked questions
Hot tubs are safe to use for anyone tall enough to stand in the spa with their head out of the water. At Hot Spring our hot tub depths range from 70cm to a little under a metre, which generally means that they are safe to use for children aged five and above.
Kids can be more affected by heat than adults, so you shouldn’t set your temperature higher than body temperature (36-37C) when kids are having a soak. It’s also wise to limit these soaks to shorter periods of 5-10 minutes.
If your child is too short to stand in a hot tub with their head out of the water, they can still use the spa, but only under close adult supervision. You should also be wary of heat, keeping the water temperature at or below body temperature, and limiting the time a toddler spends in your hot tub.
Ultimately it is up to you, the hot tub owner, to be mindful of the risks and to take steps to mitigate them. If children will be in and around your hot tub, you should make regular use of your Hot Spring lockable cover, and you should consider surrounding your spa with safety fencing (which may be a requirement of your local council).
The hotter the water, the shorter the time a child should spend in a hot tub, because the younger the child, the less efficient they are at regulating their own body temperature.
If the water temperature is set to below body temperature (<36C), soaking time isn’t too much of a concern. If the water is set at or above body temperature (>37C), soaking time should be limited. At Hot Spring we recommend a maximum of five minutes for kids at these temperatures.
The best hot tub for family fun is the one that suits the needs, wants and preferences of your family. Firstly it will have enough seats and space for everyone, while still fitting comfortably in your chosen spot. But beyond that, there are a few key features that can dial up the enjoyment of your new spa.
Hot tub lighting systems, both internal and external, can add a bit of visual interest to your soak, and can help set the atmosphere. Backlit water features and fountains add real beauty while being fun for kids to play with (if you don’t mind getting splashed!). And by adding a speaker system you can set the mood to whatever you choose, from peaceful to party.
